Karamanou (PSE). – (EL) Commissioner, I am partly satisfied
with your reply; however, I was hoping that the Commission would use its authority
to put pressure on the United Arab Emirates. The good news is that the Emirates
court has acquitted Mrs Tiouli of the accusations made against her by her
rapists, but her troubles are not over yet because she still has to wait a
fortnight from the date of the ruling. The ruling was returned on 26 January;
unless I am mistaken, that was a fortnight ago today and we are waiting to see
if her passport will be returned so that she can leave the country.
I should like to
ask you, Commissioner, if you intend to collaborate with the French Government
and the French embassy in the United Arab Emirates and exercise the authority
and powers you have as Commissioner of the European Union to put an end to the
nightmare this French woman has been put through.
